Alice’s Story

(they/she)

I'm currently a 16 year old highschool student, noticeably queer to most people. My name is Alice, I use they/she pronouns and my gender identity is quite fluid.

I live in a rural state surrounded by people who often find ways to criticize everyone. Small differences are found and they are used to alienate and ostracize expressive people.

As a young queer in a rural setting I have been subject to harassment and bullying. Throughout elementary school I had been bullied for being gay, I had no idea what that meant. I made it to middle school and fellow queer youth found me. Somehow they knew before I did.

They helped me figure out that I was a queer individual, and there were others that relate to me more than I knew.

My mom was the first person I truly came out to. With a trans older brother I knew I was safe. She was sitting outside crying, because she finished her last episode of a show about drag. People telling their stories was important to her. Finally she said "I just wish I could give every gay baby a hug so they know that they're loved." At that moment I knew I should say something. I opened my arms and replied with "You may not be able to hug all of them, but you can hug the one in front of you."

That day will always be something important, a memory that proves I am loved. I'm so grateful for her acceptance and support through every step in my life.
